Have you ever laughed when your credit card statement comes in the mail?
Probably just to keep from crying hysterically, huh? Me too.
Do you chuckle at CapitalOne commercials?
Those vikings look ridiculous. No way you’d wear chain mail on the beach.
Truth is, debt isn’t funny. It’s painful, enslaving and demoralizing.
You feel trapped with no way out and the light at the end of the tunnel keeps getting farther away.
However, paying off debt can be hilarious!
The lengths some people go to eliminate credit cards and save for the future would make for an award-winning reality show. Step aside Extreme Home Makeover!
Enter, Jon Acuff. Resident comedic genius of the internets.
It doesn’t sound as cool as “James Bond, international man of mystery”, but Jon isn’t allowed to shoot people either. Unless it’s a NERF gun.
The author, blogger, funny man and creator of Stuff Christians Like (.net), recently published his second book and it is only $10.
The humorous lessons and tips that Jon shares from his family’s continued journey to be debt free will have you in stitches. The side-splitting chapters include:
- Bridesmaid Dresses: The Cruelest Thing Ladies Do To Each Other
- 5 Ways to Bedazzle Your Envelopes
- Your Kid Will Hate Dave Ramsey
- The Nerd Scorecard
- There’s No Such Thing as a 5-Star Baby Stroller
- and 34 others…
Leanne & I recently finished the Financial Peace University video series by Dave Ramsey and it is changing our lives. We highly recommend it to anyone because:
- It is NOT a get rich quick scheme
- Dave does not offer any financial services (insurance, investment portfolio, etc)
- The 7 Baby Steps are simple, but hard to follow
- The principles will help you retire with dignity and leave your kids a legacy
Jon Acuff’s book is filled with plenty of laughs (including some poster-worthy graphics) yet is strikingly poignant in calling out the truth of how we lie to ourselves to justify debt.
What’s your take on Dave Ramsey?
Have you done anything “gazelle intense” to pay off debt?

Acuff has a great way of making mundane topics hilarious. I’m sure there are people who would never read Dave Ramsey that might check out this book.
Definitely. Been a fan of SCL for awhile.
Good to see this dynamic duo teamed up, ya know?
My wife and I took the Financial Peace University course earlier this year. I am so glad that we did! We have paid off a significant amount of debt, and are now operating on the same page financially. We are no longer at odds with each other. Instead we are working as a team.
My wife and I have both taken on part time jobs in addition to our full time work in order to pay off our debt. It feels so great to see the light at the end of the tunnel!
I just got a copy of Jon’s book last week. Looking forward to reading it. Thanks for the preview, KC!
Hey Larry! Thank you for sharing a bit of your story. Definitely think the shared mindset is one of the best results of FPU.
Hope you enjoy the book. Having just finished FPU it had me laughing constantly.
